About MBWK
The MB Wicket Keeping Academy was started in 2016 by Marc Broom.
Marc is an ECB Level 3 cricket coach, is fully DBS checked, first aid compliant, and has been coaching cricketers of all ages and abilities for the last 31 years. He is the Wicket Keeping and Fielding Lead coach for the Middlesex CCC County Youth System (ages 10-19), Eastcote CC Director of Cricket, and Director of Cricket for Cricket Tots.
Marc's playing career covers the last 33 years representing Middlesex CCC from age 11-19, Middlesex CCC 2nd X1 from 1994-1996, and Eastcote CC from 1985 to date.
Marc's passion is coaching and helping cricketers achieve their true potentials.
Being a wicket keeper himself, he realised there where no specific academies for cricketers looking to develop their skills with the gloves, and over time he has slowly watched the place in a team for a front line keeper be taken by a 'batter who can catch'!
Marc's theory of a wicket keeper is an old school one, the captain is the first name on the team sheet, the keeper is the second! His influences and role models include the great keepers of the modern English game including James Foster, Chris Read, Sarah Taylor, and of course the best of them all (in his opinion) Jack Russell!
The MBWK Academy was created to facilitate those keepers who wanted to focus on their chosen discipline with like minded players, learning about all aspects of the noble art. It began in October 2016 with 8 keepers ranging in age and ability, grew to 18 keepers on the books for 2017, and is now facilitating 37 wicket keepers for the 2018/2019 winter and summer season. The abilities range from County to Club, to experienced and newbies. Ages range from 11 to 17, but the fundamentals are the same for all!
Catch the ball!
The 20-week programme delivered over the winter months has now been rolled out to the Bedfordshire County Wicket Keepers, the Buckinghamshire County Wicket Keepers and at specialist skill sessions across the county. The programme has also been assessed by Jack Russell (England legend) and Simon Guy (ex Yorkshire CCC and ECB wicket keeping coach), and the content has been approved by both.
We use all available styles of coaching equipment from Bola Professional bowling machines to basic plastic cones, video analysis to simple words on a board! All the keepers are coached according to their own individual levels and goals, and the development in all is apparent.
There are now two sections to MBWK, the Junior Academy and Senior Academy. This allows for the content to be delivered at a pace and level suitable for the players development. The Academy is now affiliated with kit manufacturer Bear Cricket, who have been brilliant with their support and ability to provide the keepers with a first class level of wicket keeping equipment.
The Academy is based at Haydon School, Pinner, Middlesex, and the sports hall is huge and well lit, enabling us to cover all aspects of wicket keeping. We have access to four new nets with the brilliant Flicx 2G playing surface.
Included in the Academy course is a Strength & Conditioning programme designed by one of the Middlesex CCC S&C coaches, James Fleming. This has been tailor made for wicket keepers, and concentrates solely on the parts of the body required to perform in a game.
